 India Fetes Egypt’s President El-Sisi As Arab World Churn Unveils New Prospects

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will be the chief guest at the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi this year.

The Indian establishment remembers well the late President Mubarak of Egypt. It took him 13 years to find time to come to India to receive the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, announced so many years earlier. Apparently, a protocol gaffe by India at a NAM summit had offended him deeply. Fortunately, fellow general and Egypt’s current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is on his third visit to Delhi and is being feted as chief guest at the Republic Day Parade. Media reports say security and defence is big on the bilateral agenda with Cairo showing interest in a range of Indian military hardware including possibly the Tejas fighter jet. Egypt will also be looking to India for regular wheat supplies as part of efforts to ensure food security.
