‘Let’s Collaborate’ China’s Ambassador Urges US, Cautions Against Trade War

Following Donald Trump’s recent U.S. presidential election victory, China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has appealed for cooperation over confrontation. In a speech at the U.S.-China Business Council dinner, Xie warned against reigniting trade or technology conflicts, emphasising the economic and social benefits of a collaborative relationship between the two countries.

Emphasis On Mutual Business Success And Global Cooperation

Without directly mentioning Trump or the election, Xie encouraged U.S. businesses to invest and expand in China, citing the success of companies like McDonald’s and Starbucks in the Chinese market. McDonald’s, he noted, opened more new stores in China last year than anywhere else, accounting for 60% of its global expansion. Shanghai also became the only major city with more than 1,000 Starbucks outlets, demonstrating the mutual benefits of open markets.

“China and the United States can achieve many great and good things through cooperation,” Xie stated, adding that the list of cooperative efforts should grow. He expressed hope for strengthened dialogue on global challenges like climate change and artificial intelligence.

Concerns Over Potential Tariff Hikes

Trump’s return to office could revive trade tensions, with his recent proposal for blanket 60% tariffs on Chinese imports—a significant jump from the 7.5% to 25% tariffs imposed during his first term. These tariffs pose a substantial threat to China’s growth, heightening concerns about economic stability for both countries.

Xie highlighted the importance of using differences between the nations as a basis for “exchanges and mutual learning” instead of “rejection and confrontation.” He underscored that the achievements of each nation should be seen as opportunities to strengthen ties, rather than create divides.

As both economies navigate a potential resurgence of trade disputes, Xie’s call reflects China’s desire to foster a constructive relationship with the U.S., despite the challenges posed by new tariffs and renewed geopolitical tensions.
