NEW DELHI: America’s steady withdrawal from world affairs and from its role of the global policeman has perplexed and upset many analysts who claim that without the US, the global liberal order would be in threat as a totalitarian China would take over. However, Sreeram Chaulia, Professor and Dean at the Jindal School of International Affairs and the author of the book Trumped: Emerging Powers In A Post-Liberal World tells Ashwin Ahmad that the withdrawal of the US is not a bad thing as it will allow the emergence of rising powers like India to come to the fore and work with ‘middle powers’ who are worried about Beijing trampling on their sovereignty or crushing them under a debt trap. India, for instance, can work with Indonesia and the two countries – that once found common cause during the Non-Aligned Movement – can seize this historical ‘window of opportunity’ to create a multipolar order in Asia. Elsewhere, other nations such as Turkey, Nigeria and Brazil can do the same in their respective regions.
