Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Beijing on Monday for a five-day state visit, highlighting China’s continued engagement with Myanmar’s military-backed leadership as the country seeks to strengthen regional ties.

The visit, made at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, marks Min Aung Hlaing’s first trip to China since assuming the presidency in April.

During his stay, the Myanmar leader is expected to hold high-level meetings with Xi as well as Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, one of China’s most senior political figures. Discussions are likely to focus on bilateral cooperation, economic ties and regional developments.

Min Aung Hlaing’s rise to the presidency followed years of military rule after he led the February 2021 coup that removed the elected government and plunged Myanmar into political turmoil. The takeover triggered a prolonged civil conflict, attracted international sanctions and contributed to a sharp decline in foreign investment.

Although Western governments have largely isolated Myanmar’s military leadership, China has maintained close relations with Naypyidaw, viewing the country as an important strategic and economic partner in Southeast Asia.

Ahead of the visit, Beijing emphasised the strength of the relationship between the two countries. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson described China and Myanmar as neighbours that had supported one another through difficult periods and continued to deepen cooperation.

The trip also reflects Myanmar’s efforts to re-establish diplomatic engagement beyond its borders. Last month, Min Aung Hlaing travelled to India for a five-day visit, his first overseas trip since becoming president, signalling a broader attempt to reconnect with regional powers after years of international isolation.

Observers say the Beijing visit could provide fresh momentum to China-Myanmar relations at a time when both sides are seeking greater economic cooperation and stability along their shared border.
