China is intensifying diplomatic activity on multiple fronts this week, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi set to chair a high-level UN Security Council meeting while Beijing simultaneously tightens export controls on drug precursor chemicals targeting North America.
Wang Yi Heads To New York
Wang Yi will travel to New York, where he will preside over a UN Security Council session on May 26, the Chinese foreign ministry confirmed Friday.
On the sidelines, Wang is expected to hold talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, along with foreign ministers from several unnamed countries, meetings that analysts say could touch on a range of pressing global issues, from the Ukraine conflict to trade tensions.
Canada Visit On Cards
Following his New York engagements, Wang will proceed to Canada from May 28 to 30, at the invitation of his Canadian counterpart.
The visit marks a notable moment in China-Canada relations, which have experienced significant turbulence in recent years over issues including trade disputes and diplomatic expulsions.
Beijing Tightens Drug Precursor Exports
The diplomatic flurry comes as Beijing announced concrete steps on the narcotics front. China’s Ministry of Commerce on Friday added three chemicals to its list of prohibited precursor exports to the United States, Mexico, and Canada, substances that can be used in the manufacturing of synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.
The move signals Beijing’s willingness to engage cooperatively on a long-standing concern raised by Washington and its North American neighbours.
Narcotics Commission Issues Fresh Warning
In a parallel action, China’s National Narcotics Control Commission issued a formal notice flagging eight additional chemicals with potential use in producing synthetic drugs.
The commission directed all relevant businesses and individuals to strictly comply with both domestic and international laws when conducting related commerce and export activities.
The dual announcements reflect a carefully calibrated Chinese strategy. Advancing high-level diplomacy while demonstrating measurable action on drug control, an issue that has been a persistent flashpoint in U.S.-China relations.
Whether these steps translate into sustained cooperation remains to be seen, but for now, Beijing appears intent on projecting both engagement and responsibility on the world stage.
