Five German lawmakers will visit Taiwan for nine days as part of the Bundestag’s Berlin–Taipei Parliamentary Circle of Friends, the German parliament confirmed on Thursday.

The visit will take place from 23 to 31 May and aims to strengthen economic and cultural cooperation between Germany and Taiwan.

Delegates are expected to meet Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, former President Tsai Ing-wen, as well as members of Taiwan’s legislature, government officials and civil society representatives.

China–Taiwan Sensitivities

Visits by foreign officials to Taiwan remain diplomatically sensitive, as China considers the self-governed island part of its territory and strongly opposes formal engagement between Taiwan and other countries.

The trip comes amid heightened international attention on Taiwan’s diplomatic standing, particularly as major powers navigate tensions with Beijing.

Broader Political Context

The visit also follows renewed focus on Taiwan in global diplomacy.

US President Donald Trump recently announced plans to speak with Taiwan’s president, a move described as unprecedented for a sitting US leader.

Trump also met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing last week, where Taiwan reportedly featured prominently in discussions.
