North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has begun reviewing the country’s progress over the past five years, describing it as a period of “great transformation”, state media reported on Saturday.
The remarks came during the second day of the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party, the country’s most significant political gathering held every five years.
Congress Sets Policy and Leadership Direction
The congress, which opened on Thursday, is expected to shape North Korea’s policy direction across key sectors including the economy, defence and diplomacy. It may also bring changes to leadership roles beneath Kim, who remains the country’s supreme leader.
Around 5,000 party members are attending the event, according to state media, with no indication of major foreign dignitaries present. However, congratulatory messages have been received from countries including Russia, China, Vietnam and Laos.
Focus on Achievements and Shortcomings
The ruling party highlighted “remarkable successes” under Kim’s leadership in areas such as politics, culture, defence and foreign relations.
At the same time, the party’s Central Committee reportedly began by examining shortcomings before turning to achievements, although details of those shortcomings were not disclosed.
Military Signals Likely to Follow
The congress is also expected to feature displays of military capability, including a possible parade and announcements on future weapons development goals.
Such signals are closely watched as indicators of North Korea’s strategic priorities amid ongoing regional tensions.
