China has pledged to deepen strategic cooperation with Myanmar and work jointly to maintain peace and stability along their shared border.
During talks in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe that China is willing to strengthen cooperation and safeguard tranquillity in the border region.
Security Concerns Remain Key Focus
According to a Chinese foreign ministry readout, Wang also expressed hope that Myanmar would ensure the safety of Chinese personnel, businesses and institutions operating in the country.
The issue has become increasingly important for Beijing as Myanmar continues to face internal conflict, armed clashes near the border and concerns over transnational criminal networks involved in online scam operations.
China has repeatedly pressed Myanmar authorities and armed groups to curb scam centres that have targeted Chinese citizens and damaged regional security.
Deepening Strategic Partnership
Wang said China remains willing to expand strategic cooperation and advance what Beijing describes as a “community with a shared future” between the two countries.
The remarks underscore China’s efforts to protect its economic and security interests in Myanmar, a strategically important neighbour that serves as a key corridor linking China to the Indian Ocean.
Why Myanmar Matters To China
Myanmar occupies a critical place in China’s regional strategy, hosting major infrastructure projects linked to the Belt and Road Initiative and providing access to energy and trade routes that bypass the Strait of Malacca.
However, ongoing instability and fighting between the Myanmar military and ethnic armed groups have complicated Beijing’s efforts to secure its investments and influence.
