Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party has begun a week-long meeting that is expected to decide key leadership positions for the next five years.

The meeting, known as a plenum, will focus on selecting candidates for top roles including prime minister, state president and National Assembly chair.

Leadership Changes Expected

Party chief To Lam is widely expected to be nominated as state president, meaning he would hold two of the country’s most powerful positions.

The nominees may be announced during the meeting, though final approval will come from parliament when it meets in April.

Focus On Governance And Growth

The meeting will also review anti-corruption efforts and set development plans for the 2026–2031 period.

Officials said these decisions are important for ensuring strong leadership and sustainable economic growth.

Vietnam is targeting annual growth of over 10% during the next five-year period.

Global Challenges In Focus

Leaders are also expected to discuss global uncertainties, including ongoing conflicts and the risk of an economic slowdown.

Officials said rising geopolitical tensions and competition between major powers are creating challenges for trade, energy and supply chains.

Rising Fuel Prices Add Pressure

Vietnam has also been affected by higher fuel prices linked to global tensions, with petrol and diesel costs rising sharply.

This adds to the economic challenges the country must manage in the coming years.
