Senior officials from the U.S. Treasury visited China last week to bolster communication channels between Washington and Beijing, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday.

The discussions focused on preparations for the next high-level meeting between Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, according to a post shared by Bessent on X.

“We look forward to continued constructive engagement between both sides, and to maintain our positive forward momentum over the coming weeks as we approach our next face-to-face engagement,” he wrote.

Details on when and where Bessent would meet He were not disclosed, but officials expect the talks to take place in the coming weeks, paving the way for a visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to China in April.

In December, Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer held a phone conversation with He, during which both sides agreed to promote the stable development of bilateral trade and economic ties, Chinese state media Xinhua reported.

Bessent previously met He in Malaysia in October to discuss a framework agreement under which Beijing deferred export controls on rare earth supplies, while Washington rolled back a 100% U.S. tariff on Chinese goods.

The Treasury Secretary has indicated that China is on track to meet its commitments under the U.S.-China trade agreement, including purchasing 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans by the end of February, signalling steady progress in bilateral economic engagement.
