Russian Military Blogger Jailed for 6.5 Years for Spreading ‘Fake News’

Russian military blogger Andrei Kurshin has received a six-and-a-half-year sentence for spreading “false information” about the Russian armed forces.

Kurshin, who managed the popular Telegram channel “Moscow Calling,” openly supported Russia’s war aims in Ukraine. But he criticised the military leadership’s handling of the campaign, which ultimately led to his arrest and conviction.

State authorities deemed the blogger’s critiques of the Russian military’s strategies unacceptable, highlighting Russia’s increasingly narrow limits on permissible discourse.
