Kremlin to Wait for Official Word on U.S.-Ukraine Peace Framework

Russia says it will wait for official updates on U.S.-Ukraine peace talks, calling the issue too complex for comment based on media reports.

The Kremlin said on Monday that it would wait for official information before commenting on reports about ongoing U.S.-Ukraine peace talks, describing the issue as too serious and complex to rely on media coverage alone.

Talks between U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators concluded in Geneva on Sunday, with both sides announcing that they had agreed on a “refined peace framework.” The document updates an earlier 28-point plan proposed by the Trump administration, which some of Kyiv’s Western allies had criticised for appearing overly accommodating toward Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Washington’s peace proposals could serve as a possible foundation for resolving the conflict in Ukraine, but warned that if Kyiv rejected them, Russian forces would continue advancing.

Kremlin Monitors Developments, But No Official Details Yet

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia has not yet received any official communication regarding the outcome of the Geneva discussions.

“We are, of course, closely monitoring the media reports that have been pouring in from Geneva over the past few days, but we have not yet received anything official,” Peskov said. “We read a statement that, following the discussions in Geneva, some amendments had been made to the text which we had seen earlier. We will wait. It seems that the dialogue is continuing.”

He declined to comment on reports suggesting the updated draft includes a modified clause on Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, which could leave open the possibility of future accession.

“This is too important and complex an issue to be guided solely by media reports,” Peskov said. “Here, it is necessary to rely on information obtained through official channels.”

No Immediate Plans for Further U.S.-Russia Meetings

Peskov added that there were no current plans for a new round of talks between Russian and U.S. negotiators this week. Moscow, he said, would continue monitoring developments while awaiting confirmation of the agreement’s contents through diplomatic channels.

The cautious tone from the Kremlin reflects ongoing uncertainty about the direction of the U.S.-led peace effort, which aims to find common ground between Kyiv and Moscow more than three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
