Days after the US Congress approved a $26 billion package for Israel and for humanitarian aid …is Tel Aviv’s strongest ally now planning sanctions against some battalions of the Israeli military?
Reports of possible sanctions were first reported in the American media.
Israeli leaders have said the sanctions would be ‘the peak of absurdity’ and ‘moral low’
If they come, Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to oppose them with ‘all his strength’.
In a statement, the Israeli military said, “Following publications about sanctions against the battalion, the IDF is not aware of the issue. If a decision is made on the matter it will be reviewed. The IDF works and will continue to work to investigate any unusual event in a practical manner and according to law.”
Allegations of excessive use of force by Israel in the West Bank are not new but have always been denied by the military.
On April 21, a mass funeral was held for 14 Palestinians killed in Israeli raids on the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarm.
This is one of the highest casualties in the West Bank region and protests by Palestinians swept the territory
Even though US President Joe Biden has said Washington’s support for Israel is ‘ironclad’, he has also warned Israel on the high civilian casualties in Gaza, the result of the six-month-old war against Hamas. As far as PM Netanyahu goes, there seems to be no change in his plan for Gaza.
