Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held separate phone calls with his Saudi and Omani counterparts on Monday to discuss security in the Strait of Hormuz and the broader regional situation, as tensions continue to simmer across the Gulf.
According to a statement published on Araqchi’s Telegram channel on Tuesday, the discussions focused on recent bilateral and regional developments, with all sides stressing the importance of closer diplomatic coordination.
Focus on Strait of Hormuz
The statement said Araqchi emphasised the need to strengthen cooperation and advance joint diplomatic efforts to promote stability in the region, including issues related to the security of the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.
The waterway is a vital corridor for global energy supplies, making its security a key concern for countries across the Gulf and the wider international community.
Call Comes After Drone Incident
Araqchi’s conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan came shortly after Saudi Arabia announced it had intercepted drones launched by Iran-affiliated groups operating in Iraq.
Riyadh said its air defences successfully shot down the drones before they could reach their targets.
Neither Iran nor Saudi Arabia disclosed additional details about the phone conversation beyond the emphasis on regional stability and diplomatic engagement.
