For the first time in his tenure, US president Joe Biden has officially communicated with Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and expressed support.
In a letter to Sharif, Biden highlighted that ties between both nations were critical for bilateral and regional peace and security.

Since taking over as US president in January 2021, Biden neither spoke to Imran Khan or his successor Sharif.

Sharif took oath as the prime minister for the second time after winning elections which were rigged in his favour by the army. Asif Ali Zardari from the Pakistan People’s Party became the president as part of the deal.

Biden in his letter said “The enduring partnership between our nations remains critical to ensuring the security of our people — and people around the world —and the United States will continue to stand with Pakistan to tackle the most pressing global and regional challenges of our time.” Biden said the support includes advancing “our shared vision for a future of greater health, security, economic growth, and access to education for all.”

He added that both the nations would continue strengthening their climate resilience, supporting sustainable agriculture and water management. He added that the United States would remain “committed to working with Pakistan to protect human rights and promote progress. Together, we will continue to forge a strong partnership between our nations and a close bond between our people.”

Both the US and Pakistan have been trying to improve relations. US Ambassador Donald Blome said that Islamabad was considered an “important partner” and expressed hope in working closely with the newly-elected government.

However, there have been concerns expressed by lawmakers in the US after the February 8 polls. Congressman Ro Khanna had led US lawmakers in alleging that the Pakistani military has been “rigging” general elections to “prop up” its candidate and deny victory to Imran Khan.
