US president Joe Biden took a dig at Donald Trump’s mental fitness during a speech at the Gridiron Dinner in Washington on Saturday.
“One candidate is too old and mentally unfit to be president. The other one is me,” Biden said.
The dinner was attended by overt 650 guests and included Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew among others.
Biden called out Trump for failing to recognise the photo of his own wife during a deposition. In the hour-long address, criticised Trump for failing to carry out fundamental duties during his tenure as president and also pointed out to Trump’s submissive behaviour towards Russian president Vladimir Putin.
“An unprecedented moment for history. Democracy and freedom are literally under attack. Putin’s on the march in Europe. My predecessor bows down to him and says to him, ‘do whatever the hell you want,” Biden added.
Trump has expressed willingness to allow Russia to behave the way it wants if members of the North American Treaty Organisation do not meet their spending guidelines.
Trump’ team has not reacted to Biden’s comments, but Trump from time to time has questioned Biden’s mental capacity to be president stating that Biden’s memory is hazy and he appears confused.
Since 2018, when Trump was the president, this is the first time a president has come to the dinner, which is attended by politicians and journalists who trade humorous barbs.
Meanwhile, Trump has said that he favours a national abortion ban after a certain number of weeks.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said that he would “soon” issue a proposal on the number of weeks at which a ban should be implemented.
“We’re going to find out. Pretty soon, I’m gonna be making a decision. I would like to see if we could make both sides happy,” he added.
