Even though authorities in Bangladesh are taking measures to restore normalcy, students continue to target more officials appointed during Sheikh Hasina’s regime.
Sheikh Hasina’s Sudden Resignation
Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled Bangladesh on August 5.
Hasina’s resignation ended her uninterrupted rule of 15 years in the South Asian nation of 170 million people.
Law Ministry Announces Resignation Of Chief Justice
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned, the law ministry’s adviser Asif Nazrul said in a Facebook video post.
Hasan resigned after students in Bangladesh warned him of “dire consequences” if he did not.
Hundreds of protesters, largely students, surrounded the Bangladesh Supreme Court, demanding the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice, seen as a Hasina loyalist.
Hasan was apppointed last year.
Reuters could not immediately contact Hassan.
Interim Government Adviser Asks Protesters To Remain Calm
Nazrul, an adviser in the new caretaker government, urged protesters to remain peaceful. “Don’t damage any public property,” he said in the post.
Bank Governor Also Resigns
Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder has also resigned.
Finance Ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters that the Bangladesh Bank Governor’s resignation has not been accepted, given the importance of the position.
Reuters could not contact Talukder.
Days earlier, four deputy governors were forced to resign.
Vice Chancellor Of Dhaka University Also Resigns
The vice chancellor of Dhaka University, A.S.M. Maksud Kamal, has also resigned, the university said.
Reuters was unable to contact Kamal.
The university has been the epicentre of deadly protests that escalated in July against quotas in government jobs before morphing into an oust-Hasina campaign.
Hasina in Delhi
Hasina is taking shelter in New Delhi after she fled due to the uprising that killed about 300 people.
Many of those who died were students
According to news reports, Hasina is seeking asylum in a third country.
Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his government’s prompt action following the developments in the neighbouring country.
Changes In Bangladesh
Since her departure, a new new police chief was appointed in Bangladesh as part of a shake-up of the security top brass.
Besides, Bangladesh now has a new head of the technical intelligence monitoring agency.
Notably, Bangladesh Army also announced a rejig in its top level ranks.
