And defence spending is projected to rise further, says the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in its Military Balance report for 2024. The Russia-Ukraine war is almost two years old and continuing; the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza Strip has elicited military responses from Iran-backed groups such as the Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. India too is spending more on defence. Blame it on Chinese aggression and perpetual poking by Pakistan.
