NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka appears on the verge of total anarchy. The mobs are ruling the streets and although the prime minister’s office said a state of emergency has been declared, who will enforce it and how is not clear.
In this conversation on The Gist, Dr. Harinda Vidanage of the Department of Strategic Studies, Sir John Kotelawala Defence University in Colombo, warns that there is evidence of the role of ultra left wing groups in the public protests. It’s not clear if these groups are armed but they appear to be working to a plan, he says.
The worst is feared in the event of an armed confrontation. The army has held back all these months but if it comes under attack, it may have no option but to retaliate.
