NEW DELHI: The images streaming out of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, in the last 48 hours are proof that the mobs have taken over. There is no visible government, the whereabouts of President Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Wickeramasinghe are not known, and the road ahead is uncertain.
In this chat on StratNewsGlobal, editor in chief Nitin Gokhale, who was in Sri Lanka less than three months ago, underscored some key points. Minus a functioning government, there’s no way Sri Lanka can get any financial assistance from either the IMF or foreign governments. Whether the mobs understand this or even care, is not clear.
India has committed nearly $4 billion in food, fuel and fertilizer but is now waiting to see whether the ground situation improves, will the politicians get their act together. The longer the chaos in the streets, the greater the danger of complete breakdown.
