NEW DELHI: No permission has yet been given to a Chinese ship that wants to dock in Sri Lanka next month; negotiations are on, says Sri Lankan foreign minister Ali Sabry. India has expressed security concerns over the docking of Shi Yan 6, supposedly a research/survey vessel. A year ago, a similar visit by another Chinese ship to Hambantota had drawn strong reactions from India. “We have to ask questions: how are these visits related to the requirements of Sri Lanka; what is the contribution of these visits to enhancing the security of the region,” says Gopal Baglay, India’s high commissioner to Sri Lanka. Speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale on ‘The Gist’, he said such frequent presence of Chinese ships in Sri Lankan waters is not surprising, given enhanced activities by China in the Indian Ocean Region. Tune in for more.
