NEW DELHI: On the request of the United Nations, India will send in more troops for peacekeeping in the restive region of Abyei in Africa. Ever since India first contributed to UN peacekeeping operations in 1950, it has taken part in 51 of 71 such missions. Some Indians have commanded multinational peace efforts under the UN umbrella, the latest being Lt Gen SS Tinaikar, who is retiring after leading the world’s largest peace operation, UNMISS, in South Sudan.
