Taiwan is restricting public gatherings and shutting down entertainment spots after a record 180 cases of covid over the weekend. People are being advised to stay at home with alert levels in Taipei being extended to the month end. But schools and colleges will remain open as also department stores, restaurants and offices. Officials clarified that the idea was to stop people from moving around.
The source of the new infections is not clear for at least half of those infected. It threatens to shatter Taiwan’s record as one of the world’s biggest success stories in combating Covid. Until now, Taiwan has had 1475 confirmed cases and 12 deaths.
