A foreign power hacked into Belgium’s home ministry two years ago, according to a report in a local daily. De Standaard said the hack took place in April 2019 and the government kept it quiet with details coming out only now. “All fingers pointing to China,” the paper said with information about Belgium’s whole government, police databases, election management, crisis management and so on being pilfered.
The hackers targeted the Microsoft Exchange which organises mail traffic within large organisations. Experts said the hackers used stolen passwords or exploited other vulnerabilities that are not yet known.
