India has assumed the rotational UN Security Council(UNSC) Presidency for the month of August. For the first time, an Indian Prime Minister will virtually preside over an open debate at the UNSC. PM Narendra Modi will chair the open debate on ‘Maintenance of International peace and security: Maritime security’ on August 9. In addition, India is presiding over signature events on peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. Consultations are also being held on Afghanistan’s request to convene an emergency UN Security Council Session. Speaking to India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on August 3, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar said the “UN and the international community must play a greater role to stop the unfolding tragedy due to Taliban violence & atrocities.” India is also the chair of the 1988 Taliban sanctions committee.
