In a decisive move following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, India has imposed a complete ban on all imports from Pakistan, citing national security and public policy concerns.

The Ministry of Commerce issued a notification stating that, effective immediately, no goods—whether directly or indirectly imported or in transit from Pakistan—will be allowed entry into India. Any exceptions will require prior government approval.

Rising Tensions

This comes amid rising hostilities after terrorists massacred 26 civilians, including a Nepalese tourist, in Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.

Intelligence reports linked the attack to Pakistan-based terror networks, prompting a swift and firm response from New Delhi.

The Wagah-Attari trade route had already been shut, and this latest restriction adds to earlier measures like the 200% duty on Pakistani imports post the 2019 Pulwama attack. In 2024–25, imports from Pakistan made up less than 0.0001% of India’s total.

Aftermath Of Attack

India also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, threatening to block or divert water flow to Pakistan—a move that could severely impact millions.

Additionally, all Pakistani visas were revoked, with nationals ordered to leave Indian territory, including those on medical visas.

In response, Pakistan has threatened to scrap all bilateral agreements, including the historic Simla Accord. Diplomatic ties have been further downgraded as skirmishes and provocations continue along the Line of Control.

India has consistently accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, which Islamabad denies.

Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed that no trade dialogue will resume unless terrorism is eradicated from Jammu and Kashmir.

Pahalgam Terror Attack

On April 22, Pahalgam’s scenic Baisaran meadow echoed with the sounds of gunshots when terrorists shot dead 26 men, mostly non-Muslim tourists, in one of the deadliest terror attacks on civilians in the country.

Survivors said the gunmen asked some victims about their religion and demanded they recite Islamic verses. Those who failed or hesitated were shot in the head.

Security officials said at least five terrorists split into smaller groups and attacked three zones in the meadow.

Lasting under ten minutes, the assault left 26 dead, including 25 tourists and a local pony operator.

An Intelligence Bureau (IB) official, an Indian Navy Lieutenant, and an Indian Air Force (IAF) corporal — all were on vacation with their families — were among the deceased.

The massacre triggered nationwide outrage and escalated India-Pakistan tensions as New Delhi vowed to avenge the killings.
