NEW DELHI: Last month Parliament finally passed—after failing several times since 1996—to pass a law mandating that a third of elected representatives will be women. This will apply to Parliament as well as state legislatures and will go into effect in 2029.
Significantly, the law was passed with near consensus. The usual suspects, who had successfully sabotaged previous attempts to pass the law, too fell in line. What changed?
How will the new law impact the socio-economic framework? How will public policy change?
To answer this and many more questions we spoke to Shamika Ravi, economist and member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC).
