China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific is unavoidable when analysing the region’s geopolitical dynamics.
In an interview with StratNews Global during the 2024 Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue at the Manekshaw Centre Auditorium in Delhi Cantonment, Dr. Shafiah Muhibat, Deputy Executive Director for Research at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, emphasised that any discussion on the Indo-Pacific cannot exclude China’s role.
Dr Shafiah shared her insights into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) strategic stance on China. The complexities of the South China Sea territorial disputes remain a critical issue for ASEAN countries. However, she noted that Indonesia and its neighbours are striving to balance their economic ties with China while safeguarding their own strategic interests. This delicate balancing act defines much of ASEAN’s foreign policy approach towards Beijing.
Strengthening Indonesia-India Defence Ties
Indonesia’s defence and diplomatic relations with India were also a key topic in Dr Shafiah’s discussion. She highlighted the areas of cooperation, shared challenges, and mutual interests that shape these ties. As Indonesia seeks to enhance its defence capabilities, it views India as a valuable partner in ensuring regional stability and strengthening security cooperation across the region.
