A court in Colombo has summoned former President Maithripala Sirisena to appear before it on October 14 in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. Based on a private complaint filed by Rev. Father Cyril Gamini and Jesudasan Nadesan, a victim of the Easter Sunday terror attacks, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage issued a notice naming Sirisena as a suspect in the case. The complaint alleged negligence and failure to prevent the terrorist attacks that killed over 250 people on April 21, 2019. The counsel for the complainants argued that despite receiving information that a terrorist attack would be carried out on Easter Sunday, as the Defence Minister, then President Maithripala Sirisena had committed an offence under Section 298 of the Penal Code by acting negligently to prevent it.
