Border Issue Not Whole Story Of India-China Relations: Defense Spokesperson

“The boundary dispute is a legacy issue between China and India but it does not represent the whole picture of bilateral relations,” said Senior Colonel Wu Qian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, at a regular press conference on Thursday. Spokesperson Wu made the remarks when asked to comment on the previous statement of India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who said that China violated the bilateral consensus in 2020 and assembled a large amount of military forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), thus triggering the conflict in the Galwan Valley. And he claimed to have made it clear to the Chinese side that unless a solution is found at the border, India-China relations cannot move on normally. Wu pointed out that firstly, the Galwan Valley lies on the Chinese side of the western sector along the LAC. The relevant incident happened only because the Indian side violated bilateral consensus and made unilateral provocations. Therefore, the responsibility lies entirely with the Indian side. “It is unwise and inappropriate for the Indian side to link the boundary issue with the overall relations. This approach is against the shared interests of the two countries,” he stressed.

China Accuses Philippines Of Provocations In South China Sea

China claims the Philippines has once again provoked it by airdropping supplies to its illegally grounded warship on Ren’ai Jiao (also known as Ren’ai Reef). It also accused the Philippines fishermen of trespassing on Huangyan Dao (also known as Huangyan Island) Gan Yu, a spokesperson at the China Coast Guard, said in a statement late on Saturday that a small Philippine aircraft on January 21 airdropped supplies to the Philippine warship, which remains illegally grounded on China’s Ren’ai Jiao. Demanding that the Philippines stop its provocations and hype, Gan said that the Philippine side disregards facts and hypes the situation to intentionally mislead the international community, and this approach is not conducive to easing tensions in the South China Sea. The CCG will strengthen law enforcement at Ren’ai Jiao and its adjacent waters to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights, the spokesperson said.

China Expels Japan’s Ships From Its Territorial Waters Near Diaoyu Dao

The China Coast Guard (CCG) said on Saturday that it has taken necessary control measures and warned off a Japanese fishing vessel and several patrol ships that illegally entered China’s territorial waters near the Diaoyu Dao earlier in the day. The Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands are China’s inherent territory, and the CCG conducted maritime rights protection and law enforcement activities in waters under China’s jurisdiction in accordance with the law, said Gan Yu, spokesperson for the CCG, in a statement. “We urge the Japanese side to immediately stop all illegal activities in the waters and make sure incidents like this will never happen again,” the spokesperson said.

Nitin A Gokhale WhatsApp Channel

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, held a new round of talks with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan here on Friday and Saturday. During the talks, the two sides had candid, substantive and fruitful strategic communication on implementing the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries in San Francisco and properly handling important and sensitive issues in China-US relations. Wang, also director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, noted that as this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the US, both sides should take this opportunity to draw experience and lessons and treat each other as equals. Wang also emphasised that the Taiwan question is China’s internal affair, and the recent election in the Taiwan region cannot change the basic fact that Taiwan is part of China. The biggest risk to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait comes from “Taiwan independence”, which also poses the biggest challenge to China-US relations.
