Indonesia’s newly-elected President Prabowo Subianto will visit China and the United States during a five-nation trip just a few weeks after taking office.

Travel Plans

Kompas newspaper reported on the President’s travel plans, on Tuesday.

China will be Prabowo’s first destination as President.

Prabowo took office on October 20.

He will meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang and officials at National People’s Congress, Kompas said

The former Defence Minister and Special Forces Commander will visit China, the United States, Peru, Brazil, and Britain, Kompas said, citing sources.

This signals his intent to pursue an active role on the international stage.

He will then travel to Washington to meet U.S. President Joe Biden, Kompas said but did not specify the proposed dates of those visits.

Prabowo will then go to Peru to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on November 14-15.

After this, he will travel to Brazil for the G20 Summit on November 18-19, the report said.

Previous Travels

As president-elect, he had visited 21 countries, including China, Japan, Russia, and Australia.

He has said his presidency will continue Indonesia’s long-held foreign policy of non-alignment.

Indonesia Must Learn From The East

In November 2023, Prabowo called for “rebalancing”.

He said that in the past decades, Indonesia looked to the West and now it should learn from the East like China, India, Japan and South Korea

The foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for Prabowo’s office was unable to immediately confirm the trip had been planned.

The U.S. presidential election takes place on November 5 and it is not clear if a winner will be known by the time Prabowo arrives.
