Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrives in Delhi on Wednesday for her first official visit since assuming office. The summit with Narendra Modi comes after the meeting of Quad foreign ministers in May this year where, increasingly, India and Japan are seen as the grouping’s strongest bilateral pillar.

The discussions between Modi and Takaichi are expected to focus on the agenda outlined during the Quad ministerial meeting.  Economic security is likely to dominate the summit as both countries seek to reduce weaknesses in critical supply chains amid rising geopolitical competition.

Some announcements are likely to be made to deepen cooperation in critical minerals, clean energy technologies, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure.

Also, a joint declaration on economic security is expected as both sides are likely to stress the importance of strong supply chains, fair market practices and coordinated responses against economic coercion

Cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, quantum technologies and digital innovation, reflecting both countries’ growing emphasis on trusted technology ecosystems will figure in the talks.

The two countries have expanded military cooperation over the past decade through joint naval exercises, defence dialogues, logistics agreements and maritime domain awareness initiatives. Exploring avenues for deeper collaboration in defence technology, capacity building and Indo-Pacific maritime security is on the agenda of the talks.

In space, the jointly developed Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) mission between ISRO and JAXA has emerged as a flagship symbol of the strategic partnership. Beyond leaders will explore further cooperation in satellite applications, space situational awareness, dual-use technologies and artificial intelligence.
