A human-trafficking suspect was shot and wounded by a U.S. Border Patrol Agent on Tuesday. The suspect engaged in a shootout with the agent after firing at a federal government helicopter in Arizona, according to officials.
The suspect, convicted on a previous smuggling charge, was a fugitive after escaping a halfway house. The Pima County Sheriff and the FBI revealed in a press conference that the suspect had undergone surgery and was in serious but stable condition.
Assault, Alien Smuggling Charges
The shooting took place in the desert around the town of Arivaca, approximately 10 miles (16 km) from the U.S.-Mexico border, a busy crossing area for migrants and a site of past tensions between immigration advocates and the Border Patrol.
The suspect, Patrick Gary Schlegel, 34, was identified by FBI Special Agent Heith Janke. Schlegel was expected to be charged with assault on a federal officer, alien smuggling, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
“Let me be clear, any assault on law enforcement officers will not be tolerated,” Janke said. “The FBI will continue to vigorously investigate those who harm or threaten to do harm to those who wear the badge.”
Schlegel had an arrest warrant out for him for fleeing the Tucson halfway house on 15th December, 2024, according to federal court documents. He had been sentenced to three years for transportation of illegal aliens and possession of firearms.
During the conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos disclosed that Border Agents were in pursuit of Schlegel’s vehicle on Tuesday after several passengers got out and fled.
They later spotted the vehicle near Arivaca, where the driver stopped and fled on foot, firing at an airborne Customs and Border Protection helicopter, Janke stated.
Republicans On The Defensive
This incident near the Mexican border occurred during heightened tensions in the United States after ICE agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota, Renee Good, 37, and Alex Pretti, 37, as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Masked ICE agents in military-style gear are now a common sight in the country, the cause of protests in several cities, including Minneapolis, where agents have resorted to deadly force.
Public support for Trump’s immigration enforcement has been dwindling both before and after the Pretti shooting, according to a Reuters poll. However, the issue has put Republicans on the defensive ahead of November’s midterm elections.
