PM Narendra Modi addresses the G7 Outreach Session on AI and Energy, Africa and Mediterranean

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that Artificial Intelligence should be aimed at fostering progress and well-being of all.

Addressing the Outreach session on Artificial Intelligence and Energy, Africa and the Mediterranean at the G7 Summit at Apulia, Italy on Friday, he said that for technology to be successful, it had to be underpinned by a human-centric approach.

Referring to India’s AI Mission premised on “AI for All”, the Prime Minister noted that with this broader objective in mind, India was fostering international collaboration as a founding member of the Global Partnership for AI.

Pointing out that India is among the first few countries to have formulated a national strategy for AI, he said that “During the G20 summit hosted by India last year, we emphasized the importance of international governance in AI. In the future too, we will continue to work with all countries to make AI transparent, fair, secure, accessible and responsible.’’

In March, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted India-backed landmark global resolution on the promotion of “safe, secure and trustworthy” artificial intelligence (AI) systems that will also benefit sustainable development for all.

The nonbinding resolution proposed by the US and co-sponsored by India among 120 member countries was adopted by consensus without a vote.

Last month, PM Modi said India will soon see mega innovations in new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in local manufacturing and the creation of digital public infrastructure for the world.

In his address to the G7, Prime Minister Modi also elaborated on India’s energy transition pathway, based on availability, accessibility, affordability and acceptability. He also underscored that the country was working towards achieving the target of Net Zero by 2070.

“Alluding to India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), he called upon the global community to join the tree plantation campaign launched by him on World Environment Day – “Plant4Mother” (Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam) and make it a mass movement with personal touch and global responsibility,” the statement read.

Referring to the concerns of the Global South, in particular Africa, he said India considered it “its responsibility to place the priorities and concerns of the countries of the Global South on the world stage.

“We are proud that the G20, under India’s chairmanship, made the African Union permanent member. India has been contributing to the economic and social development, stability and security of all African countries, and will continue to do so,” he said.

The Outreach Session on Artificial Intelligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean was also addressed by Pope Francis and President Emmanuel Macron of France.

In his address, Pope Francis said, “ It is up to each of us to make good use of AI.’’

PM Modi arrived in Apulia, on the southern tip of Italy, on Thursday to attend the G7 Outreach Summit, at the invitation of the Italian PM Giorgia Meloni.

On Friday, on the sidelines of the summit in the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort, he held bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and pull-aside meetings with U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

PM Modi met Pope Francis with a warm embrace and invited him to visit India.
